Journalists will never stick around this app long term sadly unless it adds quote posting. We desperately need it to communicate effectively, build on each others ideas, and add crucial context to posts. These are things replies simply do not accomplish. Also quote posting or reblogging does not = harassment! Tumblr, for instance, has had the feature since the beginning. We need it here now too 🙏🏻

@taylorlorenz i disagree that they won't stick around necessarily... but it really is a useful feature, contrary to the beliefs of some here.

A few notes though:

1. Multiple mastodon forks have QT functionality. I expect that will expand.
2. QT was only added to Twitter in 2015 (and only named QT officially in 2020) so the site did exist before it with plenty of users...
3. I expect that we'll start to build some norms around here regarding the feature that make it even better than at Twitter.

@mmasnick @taylorlorenz I saw a thread earlier on how quote boosts might be engineered for better conversations than QTs if the original post is on top and your comment below. Then multiple QBs could be grouped together in the timeline by showing the original once and the QB comments below. I don't know if this is true, but it sounds at least plausible and something that should be looked into.

@mmasnick @taylorlorenz This is how it works on Facebook, and I can't remember ever seeing anyone have the same damning analysis of the fb share feature as clout chasing, rage baiting, dog piling civil discord destroying feature as I see people talk about QTs like every day on here. But then again Mastodon is more like Twitter, so comparing it with fb is less salient, of course. And many would say fb has been terrible for discourse too, with good reason.
