Ok, so the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) (update - corrected name) have just asked me, as "Dear Supporter of Digital Freedom" (I've supported the organisation for a couple decades), to complete a community survey... which uses Microsoft Forms. Are they serious?! What a slap in the face. It's actually gut-wrenching. That's their credibility gone. I'm really disappointed.
Oh dear. I've had a response from the EFF, and they've defended their choice, saying that 'they don't have the resources' to use a more values-compatible (my term) tool for the job. They need to remember that 'expedience is the absence of principle.' I've written a response their attitude undermines their very purpose for existence, but going to sit on it a bit. I'm very disappointed in the EFF - if *any* organisation on the planet needs to grasp this, it's them. Otherwise, they're a failure.
@lightweight Times like this it’s usually a good idea to follow the money so I wanted to find out which corporate entities, if any, fund the EFF but a quick check turned up that the EFF apparently doesn’t disclose its corporate donors. That’s actually quite shocking. Privacy is a human right – it is not a means for organisations and corporations to shirk transparency.
@aral @lightweight Does @eff check it's interactions here on fedi? If so I'd like you to see above and reply here, thanks.
@aral @forteller @lightweight @eff it's not like there's no alternative, like https://framaforms.org/abc/en/ from @Framasoft …
@eff @aral @Framasoft @forteller @mmu_man @lightweight Plus they have literally thousands of supporters who would gladly build them a quick single file HTML CGI form that stored the responses in a CSV file for them and could be hosted on any cheap web host. It’d be, what, half an hour’s work tops?
@mmu_man @aral @forteller @lightweight @eff @Framasoft
Exactly, it shouldn't take much effort to contact one of those providers and asking for their support.
And even if most of the tools you named are European, there should exist a US-based organisation that hosts those or similar projects.
Does anyone know of organisations in the US, non-profit or not?
@gvlx seems like the fact that they don't seem to have skilled people (on staff or supporters) to set up their own is absurd. This stuff isn't hard - I do it every day, and I'm hardly unique or uniquely gifted. @mmu_man @aral @forteller @eff @Framasoft
