“Sand Dune Abstract” — Sand dune patterns in evening light, Death Valley.

I first photographed this specific subject in Death Valley well over a decade ago, and perhaps closer to two decades. I “discovered” it by accident while driving back from visiting an entirely different feature. I had stopped in this location to photograph other things, and as I scanned the landscape I noticed this section of almost pure sand dunes. I went here again this year at the end of February when the light on my intended subject died early, and I thought I might be able to work with the soft light in this spot…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/03/16/sa

Smoky sunrise. Sunrise at the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve a couple of years ago.

There were multiple wind-driven wildfires yesterday afternoon and night. One moved into the town of Mannford and claimed several buildings and homes. Air quality with dust and smoke hit 333 at 01:00 CDT this morning. Coverage, other than local news and spotters, was dismal. The fires did not make it to INCIWeb or MODIS. Only the Infrared satellites and the GOES-East Fire Temperature maps showed the fires. That lack of information made it difficult to keep friends without TV access informed.

Something brand new, the tree and ravens were captured in the highlands of Falls Creek here in Australia. We have very chaotic forests which means the fog is quite vital to making a clear composition. The ravens were captured in nearby trees as there are many found in this area, just not where you want them =P

“Gulllies and Strata, Morning Light” — Highly eroded gullies and strata, Death Valley National Park.

Some geological formations in Death Valley National Park are simply otherworldly. The sparse vegetation lays these features bare — they are more visible than in places covered by forests and other vegetation. The landscape has been uplifted, split, warped, and eroded in remarkable ways.
