Today in Labor History March 9, 1911: Frank Little and other free-speech fighters were released from jail in Fresno, California, where they had been fighting for the right to speak to and organize workers on public streets. Little was a Cherokee miner and IWW union organizer. He helped organize oil workers, timber workers and migrant farm workers in California. He participated in free speech fights in Missoula, Spokane and Fresno, and helped pioneer many of the passive resistance techniques later used by the Civil Rights movement. He was also an anti-war activist, calling U.S. soldiers “Uncle Sam’s scabs in uniforms.” 1917, he helped organize the Speculator Mine strike in Butte, Montana. Vigilantes broke into his boarding house, dragged him through the streets while tied to the back of a car, and then lynched him from a railroad trestle. Prior to Little’s assassination, Author Dashiell Hammett had been asked by the Pinkerton Detective Agency to murder him. Hammett declined.

#Fascism isn't a new phenomenon but is has a #history and understanding it is necessary for #prevention & #resistance.

There is an often overlooked work by #italian #writer, #philosopher & #antifascist #UmbertoEco

First published 1995 in the #NewYorkReviewOfBooks nybooks.com/articles/1995/06/2

There was no #gamification that time

There is a #wikipedia article on it & many opportunities to find it in different languages

Anyways, on a more selfish note for today - if you want to do something that I would appreciate for my birthday, the best thing is to read/listen/play through something I made and let me know if you found it interesting or what I could do better or tell other people about it, because I churn out a lot of text and stuff and most of it feels like it drops into the void.

So incoming list of things I did (or at least got released) while being 30:

Hello #mastadon!

I am remaking this to repin. Asking for #fedihelp!

I am a #writer who is also interested in #photography #editing #video and other projects.

I have limited resources on #disability and a #donation would be used only for projects.

My #socialmedia links with #clapper & #youtube are in my about section, and ways to #help.

I was #homeless for a long time.

I am just trying to bring attention to how awful it is, and my experiences, and want to do more.

Thank you 💜❤️

UK creatives: please take a few minutes to say "NO" to giving up copyright protection. You only have until 25th February to complete the UK government's AI consultation survey.

The good news: you won't have to complete all 52 questions! Only nine are essential, and I've found some templates you can use if you don't have time to think of your own responses.

Don't make life easy for those who couldn't care less about our work.

Swap out some mindless scrolling for this post, I bet you learn something or, at the very least, find it interesting.

Being wrong—really wrong—is actually a great way to figure out what’s really right. In this post I cover health, socialising, rationality, information and being 'nice'.

Prove me wrong, I love it 🙏🏿

By Hand · Five Things I Was Wrong About (Until I Was Right)The truth matters. But I’ve learned that getting to it usually means being wrong first. And being wrong—really wrong—is the best way to figure out what’s actually right. Because of that, I don’t get too attached to what I believe—just to the idea that

I wouldn't mind being #professional though, so I have an idea I want to try-

🧵 1/n 'Writing is breathing, books are living.'
That was on my old business cards. I realised how true the saying is for me yesterday when I started blogging again. I took a deep breath again and danced on the keyboard.
My problem was: how do I find adequate language in completely absurd times, without using the narrative of resigned apocalypse twaddle, without giving too much space to those who are politically keen to be quoted often, even if it

... [giant Instagram feeds and scrolling TikTok] leaves me feeling small and inadequate. As in ”all the photos look really great and every photographer is so much better than me.”

Buck up. Sometimes I feel that way, but then I look at the volume of photos I have captured from my more productive periods. It is like National Geographic photographers have said it is: It takes ten dozen 36 exposure rolls of photographs to produce the three that get published—and you make a living. (Ain't digital photography great?)

I find that my take of really nice photos is pretty good with experience, but my much fewer gems are far better than anything in most feeds. Add good post-production skills to the mix?

A shotgun makes an impressive hole, but instead of hitting the bull's-eye it destroys the target. There is a truism amongst writers: comparing your work to others just makes you crazy. Your style will be uniquely yours.

May I suggest that you look at your entire output? Are you better than those National Geographic, or similarly successful, photographers? Some of our work is much better than our median. If our goal is to make a name for ourselves, or to make money, we have to find our gems. Either that, or we have a really good excuse to go out and capture a thousand images today!

My view, anyway.
